In the August recollection, we look forward to the solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, where we perceive the glory of God and the glorification of Mary. We should do everything for the glory of God, thus finding our own way to heaven through Mary's motherly mediation. During the recollection, we will also meditate on the parable of the prodigal son, both from the perspective of the older son and the perspective of the younger son.
1. A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon undder her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars (Rev 12:1). Do I see in the Assumption and crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary as queen of heaven and earth a sign of hope for me, since she is associated with her Son's victory?
2. Do I entrust my life and my family's life to the motherly mediation of Mary? Do I ask her to obtain vocations for the Church and for the Work?
3. "Grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory" (Mass of the Assumption, Collect). Am I trying to live in such a way that the fruits of my actions give glory to God?
4. There was a man who had two sores; and the younger of them said to his father, "Father, give we the share of property that falls to me" (Lk 15:11-12). When I look at the story of the prodigal son, do I realize that sin steals my happiness and keeps me from God?
5. Where he tame to himself he said... (Lk 15:17). Do I ask the Holy Spirit for light to see the reality of my life from the perspective of faith? Do I go to Confession with the assurance that he is waiting for me and welcomes me with joy?
6. The older son was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him (Lk 15:28). Do my own shortcomings help me to understand and forgive others, and not be judgmental? Do I try to dialogue with my spouse, avoiding arguments that will only lead us to place barriers between us? Do I correct my children with affection and patience?
7. The father in the parable answered: This brother of yours was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found (Lk 15:31). Do I ask the Lord for a big heart which has room for everyone, even those who are hardest for me to deal with or those who have hurt me? Am I happy to see the achievements of others, whether material, human, or spiritual?
